North American F-86F-40 Sabre Sqn Leader Muhammad Mahmood Alam, Pakistan Air Force, 1965
General Background
The North American F-86 Sabre was manufactured from 1949 – 1956 and was America's first swept-wing fighter. As well as being built in the U.S. variants were built in Canada and Australia bringing the total of all variants manufactured to 9,860 units. During the Korean War the Sabre arrived to take on the other swept-wing aircraft of the conflict, the MiG-15 Fagot. The Americans claim they shot down 792 MiGs while only losing 78 Sabres, a 10:1 victory ratio which is greatly disputed.
The Aircraft
Pakistan eventually purchased 102 F-86F Sabres and began to receive the Sabres in 1954. On
September 1965 during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 Sqn Leader, Commander No.11
Squadron Muhammad Mahmood Alam became an ace within one minute when he downed five
Indian Air Force Hawker Hunter fighters in one minute. For this action he was awarded the
Sitara-e-Jurat "The star of courage". During the 1965 war he is credited with nine victories of
which six were Hawker Hunters. In 1982 Muhammad Mahmood Alam retired as an Air
Commodore.
